Tower Bridge, London's most Iconic structure crosses the Thames close to the Tower of London. Due to the commercial development in the East End of London during the latter part of the 19th Century, a bridge was needed that would allow sailing ships to pass to the Pool of London trading ports. An Act of Parliament was passed in 1885 authorising the bridge's construction designed by Architect Sir Horace Jones and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry. It is a combined Bascule and Suspension Bridge which officially opened in 1894 and is still hailed as a marvel of engineering today. Today 40,000 people per day cross Tower Bridge by car bike and on foot.
