Rolling out the Pastry & Baking Cakes
I have created this series of images on Baking and English Tea inspired by visits to my grandmother Kitty's house. This Print is a triptych of 3 of the small paintings I created. We called Kitty 'nan' and she loved to bake. She lived in Sheffield in Yorkshire England and she taught me the art of home baking. Visits to Nan's would be about making Jam Tarts, Butterfly Cakes and Ginger Parkin and eating what we had made still warm from the oven.
I loved the tactile experience of cracking the eggs one by one, weighing the flour and sugar to combine by hand in a big ceramic mixing bowl with a wooden spoon and a lot of 'elbow grease'. Afterwards the cakes would be eaten freshly baked with hot tea in china cups after a trip to her garden to pick beautiful sweet peas.
Baking involves all of our senses, it is creative, it is nurturing to bake for someone. Baking can be a kind of meditation, I loved pressing the soft pastry circles into the metal trays for the jam tarts. There is a return to baking as we find a re connection to simple pleasures, home comforts and making something by hand.
What are your earliest memories of baking ?
This is an ideal gift for all home bakers and tea drinkers !
