Liberty of London - Original Painting
£7,500.00 GBP
Liberty of London is the first painting in the 'London Landmarks series. An iconic building in London built in the Tudor Revival style and turned into a visionary store which became a mecca for designers and artists including famous pre-Raphaelite artists. Arthur Lasenby Liberty the founder of Liberty had the vision to bring in the best artifacts and design from the Far East and the Orient and also support and nurture homegrown talent such as William Morris and The Arts and Crafts movement.
Clare's painting depicts the store as it is today with the colourful flower shop at the Great Marlborough Street entrance. Using her trademark mixed media technique Clare combines detailed monoprint line drawn figures outside the front of the building which Oscar Wilde once referred to as 'The home of the artistic shopper',
"I feel a real connection with the Liberty store, I used to go there as an art student and drool over the textiles, Later I found out a textile agent I had been working with had sold one of my Dragonfly designs to Liberty Store for a range of stationery. Today its connection to the Far East as part of its history made me choose this striking building as the first in my collection of London Landmarks.
