Monet’s Garden Giverny - Original Painting

£9,500.00 GBP

When I visited Monet's House I could feel the inspiration immediately to put onto canvas not only this gorgeous pink house with the green shutters, but also the riot of colour in the garden at the front of the house. Everything about it is what I love - my love of painting interesting architectural landmarks, and my adoration of colourful flowers all combined into one of France's most famous Impressionist artist's home. Having studied Monet's work since Art School and gazed at his paintings in Art Galleries in virtually every city I have visited, there was a resonance standing in his own studio, home and garden.

In the piece of land sloping gently down from Monet’s house, which he and his family settled into in Giverny in 1883, Claude planted an orchard and enclosed the space with high stone walls. He had the majority of the pines bordering the central alley cut down bar the two yews closest to the house, to please his wife Alice.

He then set about making his ‘Clos Normand’ full of perspectives and volume, created by flower clumps of different heights, and a mixture of the simplest flowers like daisies and poppies as well as hand-chosen rare varieties. It is little known what a truly accomplished and able gardener Claude Monet was, who tended gardens not to be constrained or organised, but full of colour and left to grow rather freely.
