Purple Iris in a Contemporary Glass Bowl
Wax pastel on paper
A1 size – 59.4 × 84.1 cm

Drawn directly from life, this piece captures a cluster of deep purple Iris I purchased in West Kensington for my flat and as they came into bloom I was inspired to draw them, infact this drawing is the first artwork I have created in my new home studio in London. It feels like an important piece.

The iris symbolised power and majesty in ancient Egypt, often associated with the divine. Iris was believed to represent the essence of life and was used in the burial rites of pharaohs. The three petals of the iris were also thought to symbolize faith, wisdom, and courage and these qualities, this medicine the shamens would say have been very present in my transformational life stage and I feel the universe supporting me everytime I step into a bit more courage, its actually been quite a magical time of trust and surrender and receiving feedback Im doing good

Using wax pastels for rich, expressive texture, I explored the statuesque elegance of these beautiful tall flowers. Set in a contemporary glass bowl, with a Japanese Kanzen to hold them the composition balances stillness with energy—perfect for bringing some peaceful zen energy into any space.
