Entering into the world of art collecting can be an exhilarating experience. There are so many great pieces out there, so many famous and up-and-coming artists to discover, and so many fascinating galleries to explore. However, one of the questions that first-time collectors frequently ask me is, “How do I know if I’m investing in the right art?” While there are no tried-and-true methods to ensure you are getting an amazing piece that will quadruple in value, there are a few things to consider before you make a purchase.

DO I ACTUALLY LIKE IT?

Above all, your art should reflect your personal taste. There is no point in buying a piece that you don’t like just because you think it will appreciate in value. After all, you are the one who will have to look at it day in and day out. Plus, the market is constantly changing, so today’s hottest artist may be tomorrow’s old news. Try to choose pieces that speak to you on a visual or emotional level, and ones that make a statement about your unique style.

WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT THE ARTIST

One of the best ways to ensure you are buying a legitimate piece is to educate yourself about the artist and the particular artwork you are considering buying. Do an online search of the artist to find out their background and experience. Read the arts section of local press to find out if the work has been reviewed, and if possible, pick up a copy of the artist’s statement at the venue where the art is being displayed or check it out on their website.

If it's possible ask to meet the artist - you may have a unique opportunity to ask the artist themselves about the inspiration and process.

DOES IT FIT WITH MY EXISTING COLLECTION?

Most art collectors like to stick to a theme in their collection. For example, you may be collecting photography, watercolours, abstract art, or even pieces from a specific era. To enhance your collection, you should be considering whether each new piece will fit with the other pieces in your collection and contribute to the collection as a whole.

DOES IT COME WITH DOCUMENTATION

Clare Haxby Studio Signature

Just like any other investment, art collecting comes with risks. Even experienced collectors sometimes have problems determining whether a piece is the real deal or a scam. As a general rule of thumb, the more documentation you can get on a particular piece, the better. And the more you can verify about the piece and the seller, the less likely you will be to fall for a fake. If you are buying an original piece, make sure you get a receipt from the studio and ask for a certificate of authenticity to guarantee the provenance of the artwork.

Note:At Clare Haxby Studio we sell both our Original Paintings and all our prints are Limited Edition. The prints are signed and feature the Clare Haxby Studio Seal for Authenticity as well as a unique edition number. It is very important we give our clients the confidence that they are buying a special and unique piece of art.

DO I HAVE THE RESOURCES TO MAINTAIN IT?

Depending on the type of art you buy, there may be maintenance costs involved to keep it in the best condition possible. For example, most photographs and art prints are very susceptible to sunlight and humidity, so you may need to frame them with protective glass and keep them in a temperature controlled environment. (*See our blog post on how to frame your Limited Edition Print!)

BUDGET

Budget is obviously a big consideration.  At the Clare Haxby Studio I offer original paintings on canvas from my existing collection, a commissioned art service and also a large collection of Limited edition fine art prints,  so whether you are looking to invest in a large art piece or a print as a gift,  the collection at my studio has something for all budgets.
